I've heard of modern day Preeclampsia. I'm amazed that in 1937, your grandmother's instincts told her what to do until a doctor arrived. I can imagine the terror your mother must have felt when her body began to numb. This is a pretty compelling chapter.

Thank you for the review. Mom really thought she was dying. I've heard her tell you grandma saved her life many times.

Thank you Patricia. I'm glad my mother survived the crisis. I needed her in my life and I would have likely been very different if I had been raised my someone else.

Exciting chapter, Beth. Your grandmother somehow knew just what to do to help bring her BP down. Smart lady. Sounds like your mother's fears were well-grounded, as your father probably wouldn't have had a clue how to manage a new baby in the absence of your mother. It's a good thing women are in charge of babies. I think they are much better suited for the job.

I knew immediately it was toxemia. I'm so glad Annie had the presence of mind to do this! Praise the Lord! Wow! You're part of a miracle just like me!

Sending you my best today as always.

Thank you Sally, My grandmother was a calm women who tended to act rather the react in a crisis. My mother was more easily excited and quick to assume the worst. I'm glad my grandmother was there when mom needed her.

Wow, your grandmother was a genius! Of course, the Lord heard her prayers! You did a great job depicting the feelings that your mother might have had during that episode of toxemia. I didn't know they knew about things like that back then.

Thank you so much Helen. I don't if got the idea from something she had seen her mother do or if she was just inspired by God to to that but it worked. I really appreciate the six stars.

Wow, this was a captivating chapter. You had me freaked as your poor mother must have been as well. Your grandmother fortunately kept her cool. What an ordeal to go through, and you never knew. Ulla xcx

Thank you so much. I'm glad my grandmother did something to save my mothers life. I loved her but I'm not sure I would have wanted her raising me. She was a no nonsense person who would have probably been tough on me. I really appreciate the six stars.

Hi Beth, having a baby is usually a joyous time, but your mother and grandmother sure had their trials and tribulations to deal with. Luckily, your grandmother knew instinctively what to do. Some of the old-fashioned ways are still best. Of special note:

--in spite of this one weighing 10 lbs., she looked tiny and fragile to him.

(We do forget how small a baby is when born, even a 10 lb baby is small. You were a hardy baby. My oldest son weighed 9 lbs 9.5 ozs at birth. I am only 5 feet tall.)

--He was pretty sure his nerves wouldn't be able to take too much of that noise.

(When it came to birthing and babies, the world was different then, and men liked being left out it ... Just let me go to work. That's what I do best.)

Suggestion - Para 15, Line 4::
--When it gets to my heart, it will paralyze it, ... paralyze "me"

--Suggestion - Punctuation: Para 4, Lines 1-2

As soon as the doctor and nurse had gathered their birthing tools and left(,) Annie Jane woke Lucille who had drifted off again.

(Comma vs. period)

This is a story that reminds us that when a woman gives birth she is on the edge of death. We take having babies for granted. Well done.
Have a great day. Margaret

Thank you so much Margaret. Mom thought when the paralysis worked it's way up to her chest, it would cause he heart to stop beating. I changed the line to make it clearer. I appreciate your comments and help.

That had to be extremely scary. I've never heard of it. I guess it's not a problem in today's world. Things are so much different now. Thank you for sharing this with us. I enjoyed reading.

Glover didn't try holding the baby until the next evening, (the following evening)

Thank you Barbara. It is still around. It can happen before after or during birth. One reviewer said she had to have her baby ten weeks early because she had it. I lot of women have to be put on bed rest until the baby is born. You may know it as eclampsia or preeclampsia. It can be fatal for mother and baby.

Wow! Even more things we have in common! My birthday is September 11. My wife had a very hard C-section and suffered after Elisabeth's birth. Her mom had a stroke, affecting her motion and speech, and she always called her "Beth".
Even without these similarities, the story of your past and birth are always entertaining and well written.

As someone who had to deliver my baby 10 weeks early because of preeclamsia and toxemia, this really gave me pause. I can't imagine having the syptoms come on you like that at home with no one to tell you what was happening or really know what to do for it. So glad this had a happy ending. Very interesting story. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Marilyn. That was really early for the delivery. I hope the baby did okay and didn't have problems. I'm glad my mother had her problem after I was safely in the world. Thanks for the review and comments.
