The Heart Of Queens

Hospitality

by Carlos' girl

I remember
How the clothesline
Hung between the bricks
Of the New York tenements
And there was a coffee set,
From Italy, I can't forget
She had very little money,
But her home was warm and sunny
A household there in Queens,
She would live on little means
The African violets bloom,
The faded quilts in every room
She served cake with lemon rind,
Ricotta, the Sicilian kind
In her home she showed such care
The heart of Queens, I loved it there
