A poem about acceptance of adult transgender daughter

Rock it, girl, rocket

by A.C. Goldman

For Emma
Rock it, girl, rocket

Was it fantasy or make- believe,
those days as our son?
The photos and memories
we no longer keep in view

Karate belts and medals,
collections of shiny stones
Pictures from Prom -
her dress
and your tux

scattered remnants
Of a life
Detached from the present
They're strewn amongst boxes
These memories and more

I didn't see
 a "feminine" child
I didn't see
what you might call a clue

Though I don't have to grok it,
I want you to rock it
And I just accept it
I do
I really do.

I hope that you find
 your light again
 or the light
we thought we saw

 Your eyes now show
you are mired
 in challenges
only you can face

You as young woman
 who only now can
be our daughter

Be she
Be who you are
We are here behind
and beside you

Can't wait to see
those smiles
 and finally know
 they hide no lies
